#1 I mentionned the name due to the way some responded to this, I wanted to make sure we don't start throwing stones at one another.
#2 I got angry not because there is a site with clips on it, but because Vinnie is being exposed unfairly.

"Vinnie Garlic-olaiuta"...i LIKE that...
Those soundbytes are STILL being hosted?!! Gimme a break.
We did a HUMONGOUSLY long topic on this one almost a year ago or so, so no point in going on any further except to say that it is my understanding that this is prior to Vinnie's "change of heart" [around sometime in '98].
I must admit, when i first heard those almost a yr. ago, i also immediately thought it might be Belotti [who is mentioned on there by the guy who's doing the recording, if i recall correctly, saying something weak to the Vinman like, "but Sergio said it was OK" (DUH) -implying that it's NOT necessarily Sergio-"Schmergio" himself doing the taping.]
Derek finds it funny - no problemo, good for him, that's his perogative, & a result of his take on the matter, & also his disposition...totally understandable...& yes, he is still a "cool HODer"/not that he's gonna lose sleep over any of this ]
I guess it IS kinda funny in a way, if you look at it from the "Vinnie-garlic" perspective [statement that i also agree with], altho when i first heard it it kinda took me aback, then p'd me off that someone would do such a thing...to me, doing this BACKFIRED on the clam-head who did it & makes HIMSELF look like the real sheet-stain, instead of intended-victim Vinnie coming out with egg on his face...besides, us die-hard VC fans ain't gonna budge on the position of his playing...& we could care less about the sap[s] who did/do this
BTW - if someone taped me during one of "my moments" that we ALL have had at SOME point in our ENTIRE lives, whether private OR public, & sometimes justifiable, i'd gladly run for for "A-Hol' Poster-Boy a' da Year"
Just chalk it up to "Vin-tantrum Garlic" [courtesy of Vinnie Garlicuta]

While I condone any form of pre-madonna act, I don't care if you're a celebrity, the president of america(which pretty much accounts for nothing in my book OH!).
But in sum ways I would side with Vinnie, how would u feel if you've worked your ass off for more than 30 years and sum 15 yr old punk ass kid is trying to break down everyone of your fills and combinations and just murdering them. I'm sure like someone mentioned that there's more to the Vinman than what's writte on a sheet of paper, something that takes him over the edge in comparison to your average drummer, kinda like what Jordan felt when he played against other teams.
If Vinnie doesn't feel the need to release any instructional material(written/visual)then that's HIS PROBLEM, there's already enuff stuff available(and quite recycled I might add!), he's already giving enuff back to the community already with recorded performances and clinics.
"The only secret I know to my success is that I've been blessed by the grace of God and I've tried to be a faithful steward of what he's blessed me with. My advice to someone trying to model my career is that they don't really know me or the ins and outs of why and how I got to where I am, what it entails, or what my life is like. Rather than trying to emulate some else's life, it's good to use someone as a role model for inspiration to a degree. But be yourself because at the end of the day, after all your development, you'll come full circle and all you got is you. No matter where you go, there you are. And really the thing that is going to separate you from others, aside from certain amounts of developed ability, is your identity. Also, be honest with yourself and know that if you have something to offer, really know what it is that you have to offer and believe in it. Believe in it and just keep going"-Vinnie C

I thought the sound bytes were funny when I first heard them. Now I realize they're just the pleas of a man passionate about his art. If Vinnie wants to protect his mystique that's his right. If Vinnie wants to obfuscate his chops by allowing very little video of himself released that, too, is his prerogative. I was gonna say those recordings neither 'add to' nor 'detract from' Vinnie's image as far as I'm concerned. But now that I think about it I think they add to his legend, and I respect the guy more than ever. After he's gone everyone'll be telling stories of how much he disliked being videoed and it will all seem quaint and charming in retrospect, not unlike Buddy Rich's fabled gruff exterior.
